BENTLEY WOOD (HAMPSHIRE/WILTSHIRE)

There’s a tree-laden corner on the Hampshire/Wiltshire boundary that is home to

some of the rarest butterfly species in the UK. Just south-east of Salisbury, Bentley Wood is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and home to more than 36 species, including the Duke of Burgundy, pearl-bordered fritillary and the purple emperor. The summer months are the most rewarding time to visit as clouds of rhopalocera — to give butterflies their scientific name — zip around to keep cool. An easy two-mile circular walk, signposted and starting from the main car park, takes 40 minutes and winds through some of the butterflies’ favourite woodland spots, including the Eastern Clearing and Switchback. he Bentley Wood Shoot covers 1,600 acres on the border of Hampshire and Wiltshire, which includes 350 acres of woodland. Throughout November and December there are mixed days available with bags of between 150 and 200 birds - January days are also available when smaller bags can be accomodated - please ask. We usually stand 8 guns but can accommodate 9. On arrival the guns will be met with coffee in the warm and comfortable shoot room, which will be followed by Drawing of Pegs (plus a homemade Damson or Sloe gin) and a quick safety briefing before moving off to the first drive. After two drives there will be a short break in the field with a light snack and drink then two more drives before returning to the shoot room for refreshments – to include crusty bread homemade soup and our specialty sausages and a drink of something warming. In the afternoon there will be two more drives before returning for Tea/Coffee and fruit cake in the shoot room. A full evening meal (to suit your appetite) can be arranged with prior notice and discussion of the menu. Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.
