Nohkalikai Falls, Meghalaya

It is to India, what Angel falls (Venezuela) is to world. A hauntingly beautiful waterfall,

cascading down from the top of the gorge to the mystic deep green pool below, reminding one of the tragic legend associated with it, of a grief stricken mother who plunged to her death, unable to overcome her sorrow over the murder of her daughter by her husband. Nohkalikai Falls is the tallest plunge waterfall in India. Its height is 1100 feet (335 metres). The waterfall is located near Cherrapunji, one of the wettest places on Earth. Actually that area has few of the most beautiful waterfalls in India. Nohkalikai Falls are fed by the rainwater collected on the summit of comparatively small plateau and decrease in power during the dry season in December - February. Below the falls there has formed a plunge pool with unusual green colored water. Name of the falls (in Khasi language - "Jump of Ka Likai") is linked to a legend about local women Likai who after family tragedy became insane and jumped off the cliff next to the falls. How to reach: This falls is just five kilometers from Cherrapunji. A minimal amount of Rs.10 is charged as the entry fee (different fee for camera). Few shops stand one side facing the cliff. Steep steps spiraled down the cliff but left you disappointed as it ends bluntly in the middle. There is no proper road to the bottom of the falls, but at least you get to see the waterfall a bit closer. When to go: Nohkalikai Falls are fed by the rainwater collected on the summit of comparatively small plateau and decrease in power during the dry season in December - February. September to November can be the best time to see it in full flow. During rains it would be tough to see it as it remains covered with cloud. Where to stay: The nearest accommodation option is in Cherrapunji which offers a wide variety to suit every budget. From guest houses with basic amenities, resorts, cottages to homestays, you will be spoilt for choice.
