Surrounded by towering rock cliffs, the lake - emerald green and silent - is set in one of the
most impressive landscapes in Germany. It ist perhaps for this reason that so many visitors com to Königssee year after year. This narrow, fjord- like lake is 8 km long (5 miles), up to 1,2 km wide (3/4 mile) and lies 602 meters (2000 ft) above sea level. With a maximum depth of 192 meters (650 ft), Lake Königssee retains its cold temperature even during the hottest time of the year. It is actually the deepest and, thanks to environmental protection, the cleanest lake in Germany. State-owned from 1834, Bavaria has strived to preserve the pristine beauty of the lake, as well as the purity of its water. No private boats, fishing, windsurfing or camping are allowed at the lake. Leave the noise and hectic pace on land behind you and glide across the smooth surface in one of Lake Königssee's electric boats. The union of water, mountains and sky touches the heart and soul.
