The island is home to the historic Itsukushima Shrine, which was originally founded in the 6th century and has long been one of Japan’s most sacred sites. Even if you have not heard of Miyajima, chances are you have seen photos of the iconic shrine: it’s one of the most photographed sights in Japan, thanks to its magnificent red torii gate, which appears to be floating in the waters of the Inland Sea.
