They take million of years to form and can be found in gardens, museums and even overseas.
Now the Moeraki Boulders have a new claim to fame as one of the world's best natural wonders.
The boulders, located between Oamaru and Dunedin, attract about 300,000 people a year and Lonely Planet describes them as a "crazy playground".
"We imagine this is what it would look like if giants had abandoned a game of prehistoric bowls here on the beach.
