Today you enjoy private tour of the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site and in particular the
Sterkfontein caves and Maropeng cultural centre. (5 hours)
We’re going right right back to our beginnings, as the Cradle of Humankind is a collection of underground caverns which have acted as geological time capsules preserving thousands of fossils of extinct animals as well as some of our earliest human ancestors (or hominin species). Dr Robert Broom of the Transvaal Museum (Museum of Natural History) began excavations at the Sterkfontein caves in 1936 and in 1947 he discovered a well-preserved complete skull of a species of early man (from 2.3 million years ago), who later became known as the famous ‘Mrs Ples’. More recently ‘Little Foot’ was discovered – one of the most complete early skeletons ever found.
The tour includes a visit to the Sterkfontein Caves where we go deep into the caves, so you feel the history and strong sense of identity. There is a great exhibition at the caves that you can visit before or after the guided tour. Then we visit the Maropeng interactive visitor exhibition. At the Origins Centre we can discover the story of how human life began in Africa, including the creation of tools, language, art and spirituality. Experience cutting edge technology with holograms and virtual visual shows. This tour is a private transfer to the Elephant Santuary where you join a scheduled morning or afternoon tour. In the early 1900′s, the Magaliesberg mountains were rich in wildlife and home to abundant elephants. As a result of man’s encroachment, elephants disappeared from the landscape. One hundred years later the elephants have returned. Nestled in the Magaliesberg Mountains only one hour from Johannesburg and Pretoria, the Elephant Sanctuary lies in a malaria-free area surrounded by natural indigenous bush and is home to impala, klipspringer, baboons, porcupine, caracal, leopard, a host of other small mammals, 350 bird species and of course, six magnificent African Elephants. Your visit will bring you close to these magnificent animals, an experience to cherish and remember.
