Castelrotto/Kastelruth, Italy

This town of 6500, located 20km northeast of Bolzano, sits in the Alpe di Siusi high meadow

of the Dolomites. While the town of Castelrotto is lovely, the surrounding mountains and alpine meadows are the draw. There are loads of well-marked trails for hiking, which is the main reason to visit from May through October. Trails are easily accessed from town or any of the hotels and guesthouses. You can also catch the gondola in Suisi allo Sciliar, the town immediately to the south, or the chairlift in Castlerotto to gain some elevation so you don’t have do so much uphill walking! The town itself truly caters to the outdoor traveler with hearty food, shops selling athletic clothing (and renting mountain bikes) and hotels and guesthouses with helpful owners. My personal favorite is to take the gondola up to Campaccio and do one of the many walks from there which vary in difficulty. It’s such a breath-taking destination and a great place for hiking.
